How to Effectively Housetrain a Dog
One of the worst habits possessed by all pet dogs is their willingness to urinate almost anywhere. All inanimate objects appear to be great targets - your bedroom carpet, the living room room couch, that expensive Persian rug.
What is housebreaking or housetraining anyway? As small children, humans are taught to vist the bathroom to handle the call of nature. Unfortunately, mother dogs do not train their offspring the same way. So what you have to do is potty train your dog yourself. This training technique is simply called housebreaking or housetraining.
Here are some typical guidelines:
• No dog can control his peeing until about 12 weeks of age. But training your dog can start before then by paying attention to their behavior and the environment.
• Most puppies will need to eliminate liquids and solids about 6-7 times daily.
• When a dog starts running giddily in circles or lazily chasing its tail, it may be time to take it outside.
• Take your dog outside immediately after any meal because eating puts pressure on the colon and bladder.
The most important lesson in housebreaking a dog is communication. Make sure your pet clearly knows that peeing in the house is not acceptable. Say NO firmly and in a controlled low tone. Catch youtr dog in the act is best so there is no problem in understanding that the warning is related to the exact action.
Keep a sharp eye on your dog. When your dog looks ready to go, take him out immediately. Once he finishes his business in an acceptable location, show your appreciation by obvious affection and perhaps a treat. Give him a biscuit as a reward for correct behavior. Proper communication, consistent attention, and positive encouragement help keep your home happy and clean.
Dogs are always eager to please everyone, just like a politician. Since they will do anything to get approval from their masters, it is realatively simple to get them to act appropriately (as long as they know you are in charge). You want your dog to pee outside? Show him how happy you are when he does so. For your part know your dog’s habits so you can build your routine round them. Notice the usual times needed to go out. After dinner? Before going to bed? First thing in the morning? Pay attention and act accordingly.
